WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF OUR SUN DISAPPEARED?
Don't you think this is something we should bother about? I mean, we live because there's the sun. The sun nourishes the plants and we eat the plants, or eat animals that eat the plants.
Apparently, stars don't live forever. Just like every other thing that gives out energy, they burn with the help of fuel. This fuel is hydrogen. Just as your engine can run out of fuel, the stars too can run out of hydrogen. The only difference, however, is that the hydrogen fuel can last for millions of years. So stars can live for millions, even billions, of years. When the fuel burns out, the star explodes in a supernova, giving out huge amounts of dust and debris. Surprisingly, it is these dust particles that condense to form new planets, moons, etc.
If the sun disappeared, first, we won't notice anything. Everywhere will still be bright for about 8 minutes, because that's how long it takes for the sun's light to reach us. After this time, the earth will start flying away at a very high speed. Imagine tying a stone to a rope and swinging it above your head at a great speed. What happens when the rope eventually cuts? That's what will happen to the earth. The sun is able to hold the earth in orbit because it is so large that 1.3 million earths can fit into it. (You read that right.)
Also, everything on earth will go extremely cold. The only way to survive, then, will be to go underground, and the deeper you can go, the more likely you are to survive.
Plants, of course, will die. This is not a problem, though, because humans will still have enough oxygen to breathe for about the next one thousand years. However, there certainly will be no food.
If we survive, we could still be able to see the light from other stars at night. And assuming the earth doesn't collide with another planet or an asteroid, the earth will enter the gravity of our nearest star, the Proxima Centauri, in about 40,000 years and begin to circle around it.
So next time you want to complain about the sun, you could think of this.
