INTRODUCTION TO WHITE BLOOD CELLS (Leukocytes)

    ( Leukocytes)
Our body is made of of millions of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi).
While some are beneficial to humans(symbiont), others are harmful if the number increases above normal.

The body has developed some mechanisms to combat their harmful effects by the use of leukocytes (soldiers of the body).

This is achievable in two ways;
1. By phagocytosis
Here, two types of WBC does this job.
The polymorphonuclear Neutrophil and the macrophages( monocyte invaginated in a tissue). They achieve this same way amoeba engulfs and digest it's food using lysosomal enzymes. ( don't want to go deeper here).

2. By the use of bactericidal.
This is achievable by producing substances other than lysosome enzymes that kills these organisms directly example is peroxisome which produces hydrogen peroxide that oxidises them.  Others includes hypochlorites, superoxides and hydroxide etc.

Leukocytes are partially produced in the bone marrow especially granulocytes and monocytes while others like lymphocytes and plasma cells are generated from lymph vessels like thymus, lymph nodes and spleen.

While some serves as defence,  some are involved in the immune system by producing antibodies.

Understanding this is a step to appreciating the complexity of the body's fluid physiology.
